FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Future Tense: Reshaping the Landscape presents work by artists who are taking a critical look at the state of the environment.

Conveying current global realities in images that range from depictions of true-life events to fictional narratives and biting satire, sixty artists show their concerns with a constellation of factors that have caused global change.

Some artists question the past, others forecast the future, and some provide solutions for alternative, potentially sustainable conditions for human life, while others present sobering information from recent events that, all together, indicate a moral imperative.

This exhibition concentrates on painting, the medium historically associated with the landscape tradition. Works on paper, sculpture and installations created since 2001 are also included, as the focus of the show is not materials but the complex political and social dimensions of landscape, architecture, science and technologies.

                                                              ###

about the artist: Anke Bauer makes the intrigued hunt their way in and out of her meticulously painted landscapes. Infinite, colorful, and a tad bit aloof, these curious tower-blocks, futuristic landscapes, Space-Shuttles, and idyllic crumbling villas impress upon the viewer a creeping sense of both utopian hopefulness and industrial uneasiness. A recipient of multiply study abroad grants, she will be participating in her first American Museum exhibition at the Neuburger Museum (New York).

about the gallery: Neuberger Museum of Art is the premier museum of modern, contemporary and African art in Westchester and Fairfield Counties. A teaching museum, the Neuberger promotes the appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts as inseparable from an understanding of their place in cultural and intellectual history and their relevance to contemporary social life. The Museum’s permanent collection was established in 1969 with an extraordinary gift of more than 900 works of mid twentieth century art from the collection of financier Roy R. Neuberger. Today it comprises more than 7,000 paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculptures, installations and videos, and embraces 20th century American and European art, traditional and contemporary African art, and a growing collection of the art of our time from throughout the world.
