FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Gracing the Chicago Cultural Center’s Michigan Avenue Galleries, located at 78 E. Washington Street, just in time for summer, is Oasis: An Installation by Guerra de la Paz, a site-specific sculptural installation fashioned out of discarded clothing. This delightful work will be on view from June 10 through August 13, 2006.

Guerra de la Paz is the collaborative working name of two artists, partners Alain Guerra and Neraldo de la Paz, who live and work in Miami. Their sculpture/installations are created from collected and color-coded used clothing, from which the artists first imagine and then fabricate environments of simultaneous fantasy and reality.

Oasis: An Installation by Guerra de la Paz is organized by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs in conjunction with the Chicago Gay Games VII in July. Admission to the exhibition and gallery talks is free.

“Oasis creates a fantasy landscape like an impressionist painting, where wearable items become brush-strokes, juxtaposing a variety of colors and textures and creating a vibrantly painted setting, ” said Sofia Zutautas, Assistant Curator of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.

The public is invited to learn more about the exhibition. On Friday, June 9 at 5:30 p.m., Sofia Zutautas, along with the artists, will hold a gallery talk in the Chicago Cultural Center’s Michigan Avenue Gallery to discuss the installation. Another gallery talk with Sofia Zutautas will be held in the gallery on Thursday, July 27 at 12:15 p.m.

                                                                   ###

about the artist: Established in 1996, the name Guerra de la Paz represents a creative team effort and ongoing collaborative process that unifies two distinct styles through common aesthetics and interests. Both living in Miami since 1996 and both born in Cuba and raised in the United States, Alain Guerra and Neraldo de la Paz share the same background and process of assimilating a new culture from an early age. In addition, they each have local Midwest ties. Guerra studied at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1992 and 1993; de la Paz received a BFA in Drawing and Painting from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois in 1978.
